OVER many seasons, Greenlaw horse racing trainer Dick Allan has regularly produced one specific star from his stable.
The likes of Kharif, Adamatic, American Hero, Clay County, Sun Bird and Pat's Jester have proved prolific winners for the yard. Pat's Jester owned by Selkirk businessman Geoff Adam won the Scottish Champion Hurdle, Bula Hurdle and Ekbalco Hurdle and
almost snatched the prestigious King George V1 Gold Cup at Kempton only beaten on the run in by French horse The Fellow.
Sun Bird amassed over £187,000 in prize money winning many top staying handicap's and in the words of the trainer "looked certain to win the Ebor at York in 2003 only to be pipped at the death".
Sun Bird also finished second in the Cesarawitch at Newmarket the same year. Sadly, injury ended his career after running in the Ascot Gold Cup (at York) in 2005.
Clay County and American Hero, also a very useful flat horse, were bold front running two mile chasers and Adamatic had success over hurdles and chases and holds the two mile chase record time at Hexham, faster than two mile hurdle times.
Latest in the line of 'winners' from the Dick Allan yard, previously at St.Boswells and Pallinsburn, Cornhill and now Purves Hall, Greenlaw, is five-year-old gelding Zabeel Tower.
Previously trained by Mick Channon and James Moffat, Zabeel Tower has only been with the yard since spring 2007 but has picked up six wins for the connections including five this flat season for new owners Roxburgh Home Improvements Ltd from Hawick.
winnings for the new owners already amount to over £16,000. He also has two places and a fourth in his nine runs for owners RHI Ltd.
Dick said: "Zabeel Tower has had a great season and remember is only five-years-old.
"I think he will improve even more as a six-year-old and I can even possibly seeing him as a Lincoln or Bunbury Cup runner."
The trainer added: "Most of his wins, including three at Musselburgh are over seven furlongs or a mile and I think he could have two or three more good races in him this season."
Zabeel Tower is entered at Ayr and Chester shortly and may go again for the important race at Hamilton which was washed out last week.
In the saddle for most of his wins has been Tony Hamilton, who has over 30 wins this season. He is second jockey to Richard Fahey at Malton.
However, in the Apprentice race at Chester in late June, teenager Lance Betts was aboard for the victory.
Dick currently can only take six horses at his yard but still uses his old gallops near Cornhill. Apart from Zabeel Tower, Always Best, Fiddlers Creek, Following Flow, Bollin Thomas (winner of the Amateur Riders Derby at Epsom) and Clovella are or have been with him this year.
